Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Hon. Prof. Hellen Sambili, yesterday took to task the government over the extension of retirement age from 55 to 60 years. . “Let’s not be selfish”,she said , and emphasized that it was important for the government to give young people an opportunity to serve in the civil service. The minister was speaking during the official launch of the Kenya Youth Peace Summit at Lenana School.
The Summit organized by Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church (KELC) in partnership with Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) attended by over 200 youths from different denominations across six (6) countries- Kenya (Host), Rwanda, Tanzania, United States, Congo and South Africa.
Her statements were wildly cheered by the youths who applauded throughout the session attesting to her stand. She advised the government to retain the current retirement age and appreciate the nature of African extended family, where parents on retirement were supported by their children, therefore not seeing the need for extension.
