Magadi area , largely occupied by the Masaai, is located in Kajiado North District. Large extent of this area is arid hence their extreme dependence on livestock.

These animals that form the livelihood and backbone of the economy have since been wiped out due to the adverse climate and starvation. This has resulted into poverty, high rate of school drop outs and increased HIV/AIDS prevalence. Women and children are often bedridden with recurrent ailments due to lack of proper medical care services and poor nutrition.

Young girls walk for over 15km to sell milk which goes for Ksh 30 per litre. They would probably raise Ksh. 60 from 2 litres; buy 2kg of maize at ksh40, use ksh10 to grind it, and the balance to buy 1/8kg of sugar at ksh 10.Their families would wait eagerly for her return not having any meal during the day. Bear in mind that these are the lucky families. I envision these families slowly being eroded off the earth’s surface. This is my fear!
